Not one of the best 2D Sonic games but one that I still like to play even now. The sequel to Sonic Adventure switched up the formula and succeeded in the process. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles provided speedy stages, shooting galleries, and Chaos Emerald treasure hunts. I’d also argue that Casino Night Zone does pinball better than the entirety of Sonic Spinball ever did-it’s just a delight to mess around in those levels. Once the Green Hill nostalgia fades, you quickly recognize some pretty dated gameplay elements compared to the later Sonic entries. Sonic has no spin dash and thus trouble quickly picking up speed.
