Why Sonic Boom Will Be the Most Important Sonic Game In Years

The game features “hero,” “neutral,” and “evil” choices in every level, and depending on what combination of these you choose across the campaign, different finales will see Shadow the Hedgehog put the nail in Eggman’s coffin. Though the game’s cutscenes neglect to show the finishing blow in its entirety, it’s heavily insinuated that Shadow karate-chops the not-so-good doctor’s skull open, leaving him as little more than a scrambled egg. In a strange way, killing the main villain of a franchise is quite similar to killing the main hero — it’s an extreme rarity that always draws gasps from audiences. After all, Batman and Joker, Superman and Lex, Spider-Man and Green Goblin — guys like these are built to tussle for eternity. The only times a villain with this kind of stature actually dies is usually in a spin-off story, and even then, it leaves a mark on fans. Where “Knuckles’ Chaotix” takes a turn is right at the very end.

  • I think they are around 7-10cm tall and come on a round Amiibo-like base.
  • Yuji Naka thought up the Spin Dash attack where Sonic can run faster and avoid backtracking levels for momentum.
  • In order to determine where Sonic Frontiers is in the official set, Iizuka echoed the writeer of Ian Flynn’s statement that it’s after Sonic Forces and Team Sonic Racing.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog was released on June 23, 1991, for the Sega Genesis, boosting Genesis sales dramatically. There is a delightfully optimistic tone throughout the book, even while discussing the less-than-stellar chapters in the Sonic saga — I’m looking at you, Sonic 2006! I find that to be quite reflective of the Sonic fanbase, but in a good way. We know the series isn’t the most consistent in quality, but ol’ Mr. Needlemouse was once on top of the world, so there’s no reason why he can’t make a comeback as long as the passion remains.

Sonic Frontiers is an open world unlike anything in a Sonic game so far

The team originally intended to add a two-player mode displayed via split-screen, but Naka’s programming knowledge was not enough to implement it. However, a two-player mode would appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, whereby the second player would control Sonic’s sidekick, Miles “Tails” Prower. In the end, the Sound Test was scrapped due to time reasons and Naka used the freed up memory to add the “Se-ga!” chant used in TV commercials as a start-up sound.

Then, a brand new detail is revealed as we see Amy possibly teased, trapped in some kind of device and obscured in like a weird digital light gimmick. In Sonic Frontiers, we’ll be guiding Sonic around the open-zone areas of the Starfall Islands. After falling through a wormhole, Sonic and friends – like Tails and Amy – become separated, and the super-fast hero can do is work to collect Chaos Emeralds to get the group home safely. Sonic Frontiers was first teased in early 2021 before being officially unveiled at The Game Awards with a loose ‘2022’ release window. Sega officially dated dated Sonic Frontiers at Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022.

I’m not comparing it to any other game and instead am rating it as a standalone game. With the story laid out (by way of gaming manual since technology didn’t give us many other options), we know that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is pretty much the same as its precursor, yet once we play we learn that it’s a little different. On the surface, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 already has a unique look that lets us know this game is going to be different.

SEGA AGES Sonic The Hedgehog

With plenty of levels, unique special stages and some big boss fights, Sonic 3D Blast is a novel yet enjoyable Sonic game. Sonic Mania has a splitscreen that has two players competing to finish stages faster than the other. You can also choose any of three characters, so it’s also a fun way to see if Knuckles’ climbing or Tails’ flying is more useful for quickly navigating stages.

Though Sonic’s return to 3D isn’t without faults, the blue hedgehog’s back with a vengeance for a memorable experience

Rouge’s final level, Mad Space, uses the ‘planetoid’ subtype very excessively. King Boom Boo is a giant ghost who serves as the leader of the Boos and the boss of Death Chamber. Knuckles fights him, and King Boom Boo is invincible in the dark but weakened when he is exposed to sunlight. He has a small Sonic ghost following him around to hold an hourglass that temporarily lets light into the arena.

This is one of the only Sonic games where Sonic’s attacks genuinely feel heavy-hitting and effective. While this certainly shouldn’t excuse the development issues, or that fans spent money on a game that was clearly incomplete – but it should paint a picture of everything holding Sonic the Hedgehog back. Development was originally led by Sonic veteran Yuji Naka, who had a distinct vision for the game. But Naka soon quit to form his own company, and the scope of the project was reportedly cut down in the middle of development, with half the team taken away to work on Sonic and the Secret Rings for Wii.
